Avil Linton has been and continues to be a major influence on many, many Mississippi musicians, including Raymond Huffmaster, Mike Compton, Gene Bush, Doug Anderson, and me; also, Lyle Meador from nearby Jachin, Alabama, (whom we Mississippi musicians claim as our own!), as well as others. He has the most unique way of hearing the music and playing the melody from whatever instrument he happens to be using. The mandolin he is playing here is Randy Wood A-5 #1. It belongs to Raymond and is the one that Mike Compton played in his formative years and later used when he played with Hubert Davis as a Season Traveler. Merely saying that Avil is influential is an understatement. Any music I play has been filtered by the training, encouragement, and the occasional (OK! Frequent!) rebukes I received (and still receive!) from him over my timing, timing, timing (yes, three times timing!), tone, and attack; for not being in tune, or playing a banjo too loudly, or worst of all, straying too far from the melody so that the essence of the song is no longer part of the notes I was playing. I am so glad to have been able to receive this inspiration and instruction from him. He is the person I always wanted to be able to play LIKE! He has and still does leave me slack-jawed from time to time. It takes a lot to get that from me. I am always awed by his talent and the fresh, honest way he hears and renders his music. Others can and will say the same thing. I wish they would! If they do, I will publish it here! |
